Kindergartners encounter lemur-like hopping creatures that can't keep still and learn about gesture drawing, which is a fast, low-detail method of drawing that focuses on shape and pose of the subject. It is a good way to learn these concepts or to draw something that won't keep still. Together, the class works on creating a comic book story about four Kindergarten superheroes. Each student gets to be a model for the others to draw and each student gets to draw one of the gesture heroes for the comic.

Kindergartners later, along with K4 students, encounter some unusual clay-like creatures that mimic things they see. We talk about 3D art (sculpture) and look at a work by Edgar Degas, Little Dancer. It is a metal and fabric sculpture of a dancer. We create our own miniature sculptures using modeling clay and, as a class, create a stop-motion animation using them (check Grade 3 below for more details). Check out the scurrying sculptures!

Older students encounter strange bird-like creatures known as Avians. The culture of these creatures is centered on stories. Their history is recorded in the form of stories and images that tell stories. We talk about how stories and Art have been around for thousands of years and how the two often fit together. We discuss essential elements of a story. Students begin work on an Art Storytelling project.

Grade 01 students create shadow puppets with moving parts, write a story in small groups, then perform the story using a make-shift shadow puppet theater I set up for them.

I see Grade 01 twice as often as other grades, so I have more opportunities with them. Given how well received the gesture drawing comic was with Kindergartners, I wanted to give the First Graders a chance to try it, too. This was only for the 2010-2011 school year.

Grade 03 students use modeling clay to create small characters, write a story in small groups, then animate their favorite scene using stop-motion animation. The movies are but a few seconds long, but were a tremendous team effort to create. We used a regular digital camera to take the pictures, then I used a free program from Microsoft called PhotoStoryto create the movies. The program is made to run on Windows XP. PhotoStory creates slideshows from pictures, but will also work to do stop motion animation. This is done by importing the pictures into the program, changing settings for each image (set slide duration to .5 seconds, select all three choices in the motion section, and set the transition duration to .1 seconds). It lets you create music and finally save the movie to a movie file that can be posted to an online video library, burned to DVD, or just saved on your computer to watch on your monitor.
Movie making programs can also turn photos into stop motion animation (Movie Maker, Studio, iMovie, etc.). I use Photostory because it has a good selection of royalty free music built in.

Grade 04 students look closely at tribal masks and create paper hand puppets, write a story in small groups, then perform the story for their classmates.
We use this pattern to build the base shape for the puppet and modify it from there.
