Kindergarten students come across the ruins of what appears to be an enormous maze. We learn about ancient Greece, their myths, and their artwork. We look at Greek pottery, focusing on one that portrays a scene from the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Students recall elevation drawings from a previous architecture lesson and learn about plan drawings. Each student creates a small segment of a hallway of a labyrinth and add creatures to it drawn from above. In small, large, then full class groups, we assemble the pieces into small, medium, then a large labyrinth. As a reward for their great efforts, we play a game together helping Theseus avoid the Minotaur and escape their labyrinth. Later, I combine all class mazes into one large labyrinth measuring 5x14 feet.
Example: 2010-2011, 2011-2012, 2013-2014
Grade 01 finds a large Gothic castle. We talk about Gothic architecture features like spires, Gothic arches, gargoyles, and flying buttresses. Students create elevation drawings of their own Gothic castle, then create simple paper models of their designs.
